A JSC Russian Aircraft Corporation iniciou as entregas dos primeiros jatos de combate MiG-29UPG modernizados para a Força Aérea da Índia. Os três primeiros exemplares chegaram ao país parcialmente desmontados a bordo de um Antonov An-124.
A modernização amplia sensivelmente as capacidades do caça que agora pode cumprirmissões diurnas e noturnas sob quaisquer condições meteorológicas, empregararmamento inteligente contra outras aeronaves, alvos em solo e no mar, fixos ouem movimento.
O voo inaugural do MiG-29UPG aconteceu em 4 de fevereiro de 2011 e o contrato compreendeu uma série de reparos, modificações e adaptações que estenderam a vida operacional para mais de 3.500 horas de voo ou 40 anos.
Ao todo 69 exemplares serão modernizados pelo valor de US$ 900 milhões. Os seis primeiros aviões serão modernizados na Rússia e os demais na Índia. O MiG-29UPG é equipado com as turbinas RD-33 Series 3, de nova geração, que estão sendo fabricadas pela Hindustan Aeronautics Limited; radar Zhuk-M, capaz de detectar 10 alvos aéreos situados a 120km de distância e atacar quatro simultaneamente; novos sistemas de comunicação e navegação.
